2Entwine Releases FotoBuzz Viewlet

2Entwine | FotoBuzz Viewlet

2Entwine, the developers of Gush, have released FotoBuzz, a viewlet that implements the FotoNotes format and allows for the easy annotation of images. You have to be hosting your own blog or photoblog in order to use this. Hopefully hosted services like Blogger and TypePad will take notice!

I've been following FotoNotes and its developer, Greg Elin since 2003 when I was writing the PhotoBlogs report for Future Image and think that this has real potential to become the defacto standard for image annotation. It has already been implemented by Flickr.

As with any approach to image annotation or captioning, the closer you can move the act of annotating to the time the image is captured, the better. Once the images are sitting in files and folders on your hard disk or memory card, the annotation process becomes harder to get done. There is a big opportunity for improvement in captioning interfaces and automation. This is going to be a major area of activity and development in 2005 and beyond.

Where in the world is Esther?????

Allaha ismarladik, Turkey! on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

You should subscribe to Esther Dyson's RSS feed from Flickr. She redefines the term frequent flier. From Tokyo to Moscow to London to Istanbul, she is on the move and it is a lot of fun to get her feed and see where she is today. I'll be disappointed if she stays in NYC for a week - though there are plenty of interesting things to take picture of there.

Flickr has certainly generated a lot of buzz - both Esthr and Joi Ito are investors. They have done a nice job on the UI and are building an active community. They are also the first commercial site to implement the FotoNotes format. This is a really cool way to annotate your images. Here's a few photos I took at the recent InfoTrends Digital Imaging 2004 conference in San Jose posted to Flickr and annotated. Just click on the individual photos to see the FotoNotes.

Moving In.......

I've been neglecting my blog for the past five months. Though I have really liked using UserLand's Radio with the integrated RSS feed reader - I don't think these guys are going to make it. The hosting service has been flaky and I am now not liking being tied to a client app.

I'm now in the process of moving my old posts to this Blogger site so bear with me as I try to recreate these as time affords.
